Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Charter School?

Charter schools are publicly funded schools. Charter schools must be non-sectarian, and cannot charge tuition or discriminate by residency, race, religion, or economic status. Charter school staff and teachers are typically allowed more room for innovation in curriculum design and teaching methodology. This freedom is afforded to charter schools in return for greater accountability in student achievement.

What are Independent Study schools and Non-Classroom-Based charter schools?

Independent study is a different way of learning – it is an alternative instructional strategy for providing regular education from kindergarten through adult education. Independent study students take the same courses as students in regular classes. Each student is guided by a teacher but generally does not take daily classes with other students. As the name suggests, each student works independently.

California law authorizes charter schools to provide independent study programs through non-classroom-based instruction, such as online and distance learning. Because independent study programs may be well suited for some students who have health problems or whose needs cannot be met in a traditional classroom setting, student with special needs are increasingly turning to independent study charter schools for alternatives to traditional public school options.

How much does it cost?

NOTHING. It is free.

What is an Enriched Virtual Blended Learning Model like MY Academy use?

The Enriched Virtual model is an alternative to full-time online school that allows students to complete the majority of coursework online but meet in person with a teacher for required face-to-face learning sessions.

What is asynchronous learning that MY Academy provides?

It is a general term used to describe forms of education, instruction, and learning that do not occur in the same place or at the same time.

The term is most commonly applied to various forms of digital and online learning in which students learn from instruction—such as prerecorded video lessons or game-based learning tasks that students complete on their own—that is not being delivered in person or in real time. Asynchronous learning may also encompass a wide variety of instructional interactions, including email exchanges between teachers, online discussion boards, and course-management systems that organize instructional materials and correspondence, among many other possible variations.

What are your locations?

We come to you!

MY Academy does not have locations. Our teachers and support staff meet individually with students and families in the communities where they live

  • At public libraries
  • At community centers
  • At local government meeting rooms

How often does a student meet in person with a teacher?

Independent Study students meet in person, face to face with their Teacher of Record one time per week. Students in Homeschool meet with their Teacher of Record once every 20 instructional days.

Are teachers available to students outside of the weekly meetings?

Yes. Teachers are available via phone, email, text, Skype and online collaboration tools during regular school hours.

Can a student make up credits if they are off place to graduate?

Yes. The complete academic record of every student is reviewed by our counselor, registrar, and student services team to assist the Teacher of Record in developing the individual program of study that will lead the student to the next stop on their educational journey. Students can work at an accelerated pace to make up credits.

When does a student have class?

Independent Study allows each student and family to decide what works best for their situation – when, where, and how long is spent completing assignments. Students are expected to complete work on regularly scheduled school days.

What types of students enroll in MY Academy?

Our students are as diverse as the world they live in – with interests as wide as the universe. Typically they fall into three general categories – every student is an ACE

  • ENRICHMENT – access additional classes and “Get More”
